A nice older couple in Rigby were getting out of the goat raising business and had decided to sell their equipment. It was a perfect opportunity to get some of the things we wanted. I was able to buy a nice metal milk stand and four kidding pens!
That probably doesn't sound exciting to most of you, but it was to me. Better pens means easier setup, and I'm all for easier!
This couples goat story was cute.
They moved to Rigby from California about ten years ago. The woman decided she wanted to raise and eat goats, so they bought some Boers. I guess when the babies were born they were too cute to eat :). Before they knew it, they had too many goats.
The woman ended up going back to work and the husband was left caring for the goats. Anyone who has raised goats, knows its alot of work, and kind of a pain to raise any animal in our harsh weather.
Anyway, the husband hesitantly assumed the new responsibility. After multiple losses to the herd, frozen ears and all the other things that can and does go wrong when raising animals, he decided he was finished. He washed his hand of the responsibility, he sold the goats and told her she could pick up her hobby again when she had time to do it herself.
Not long afterward, she listed the goat equipment on Craigslist. He asked her why she was selling everything. She told him that she had watched how much work it took for him to care for the goats and had decided she didn't want to do it any more.
He didn't complain, although he did rolled his eyes. It was cute.
